Niels Eske Bruun (NEB) has graduated from the Medical School at the University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark. NEB received his postgraduate clinical education at University Hospitals in the area of Copenhagen, and NEB has earned the specialist degree in cardiology and in intern medicine. In 1993, NEB defended his Thesis for the Doctoral Degree at the University of Copenhagen. In 2005, NEB was appointed Associated Professor at the University of Copenhagen. In 2014, NEB received the title of Adjunct Professor at Aalborg University, and in 2018 NEB was appointed Clinical Professor at the Institute of Health and Science at the University of Copenhagen. Niels Eske Bruun has been the promoter and organizer of research projects in the field of hypertension, human salt and water balance, atrial natriuretic peptides, heart failure, cardiac imaging and infective endocarditis, the latter from a clinical, epidemiology and genetic perspective. Present research focuses on infective endocarditis: Data is extracted from the East Danish Database on Endocarditis, established by NEB and a colleague, looking at streptococcus endocarditis at the species level, prognostic markers and genetic variation. Other studies look at whole genome variation in S.aureus in the transition from blood to valve tissue, and human gene variation in deep S.aureus infections. Using the national Danish registers the risk of endocarditis is studied in patients with different kind of bacteremia, gender differences, patients with renal failure, and in patients with pacemaker devices. In addition, NEB participates in research groups working with valvular heart diseases, heart failure and advanced imaging techniques.
