Gitte Bunkenborg is part of the inter-professional team heading "Forskningens Hus" an inter-professional research unit at Holbæk Sygehus, and she is head of clinical research performed by researchers with a background in nursing and physiotherapy at Holbæk Sygehus. As such, she is head of a research program, comprising four individual postdoc projects with a shared research focus, entitled: "Transition and Coherence - caring for patients with multiple and/or life-threatening illnesses". As part of the research program, Gitte Bunkenborg's personal research concerns: Patient Safety in patient transitions. Her research is focused on 1) nurses' situation awareness and actions when detecting patient deterioration and preventing unexpected death including use of the Early Waring Score and Rapid Response Team, and 2) nursing documentation and communication when handing over patients from the Intensive Care Unit to the general ward. Currently Gitte Bunkenborg is conducting her post-doctoral project named: "MAT in Denmark - does it work? Does it matter? A cross regional Realist Evaluation of an in-hospital patient safety initiative - The Rapid Response Team". The project evaluates across three regions in Denmark, the outcomes of implementing a patient safety tool in Danish acute care settings. Findings and results from this study should serve to inform organisational stakeholders and managers and to facilitate discussions about the MAT, leading to initiatives to either support the retention of MAT services or guide further development of the patient safety initiative. National and international researchers within the field have joined the project providing valuable guidance and support. Furthermore, Gitte Bunkenborg has a research interest in complex clinical interventions, in implementation research, professionalism, and nursing documentation. She has conducted and published qualitative, quantitative and Mixed Methods studies. Gitte Bunkenborg received her degree as a Med.Dr.Sci. at Lund University, where she defended her thesis named: In-hospital Patient Safety - Prevention of deterioration and unexpected death by systematic and inter-professional use of early warning scoring, in April 2014. Gitte Bunkenborg's position as associated professor is at The Department of Regional Health Research, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), and she supervises PhD students at SDU and at KU.
