The Department of Medicine treats patients with a wide range of medical disorders. The department has special skills in the treatment of gastroenterological, hepatological and endocrinological diseases, but also has sections dedicated to patients with geriatric and internal medical disorders The Department of Medicine includes four wards with a total of 80 beds. Two of these units are primarily dedicated to patients with gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders; one unit is dedicated to patients with endocrine disorders and patients with internal medical disorders, while one unit primarily treats patients with geriatric and internal medical disorders. The department undertakes regional and highly specialized functions in various fields of gastroenterology/hepatology and endocrinology. The department has a large gastroenterology/hepatology outpatient clinic with approximately 3,500 patients. We diagnose and treat patients with upper gastroenterological diseases, including diagnosis of patients prior to reflux surgery, patients with inflammatory bowel diseases including complex cases, patients with chronic diarrhoeal diseases including coeliac disease and microscopic colitis, patients with intestinal failure, and patients with a wide range of hepatic disorders, including viral and autoimmune hepatitis. We collaborate with the Department of Surgery in performing both basal and highly advanced endoscopic procedures and in treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. One of the specialists in the department holds the chair as clinical professor in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Copenhagen. The endocrinological outpatient clinic treats patients with a wide range of endocrinological diseases, all forms of diabetes including insulin pump therapy, metabolic diseases, adrenal dysfunction and diseases related to metabolism. The department has its own DXA scanners and performs 3.000 scans annually. A research clinic for osteoporosis (Videncenter for Knoglesundhed) was recently established. Within endocrinology, research is primarily related to diabetes and osteoporosis. The department is active in development and research in relation to nursing. Special focus areas are topics related to patient satisfaction, nutrition and hygiene. We collaborate scientifically with other departments at our hospital and in the region, with partners at Odense, Hvidovre, Aarhus and Aalborg University Hospitals, Landspitalet, Torshavn, Faroe Islands, the Danish National Hospital (Rigshospitalet) and with universities abroad. Academic strengths: Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endocrinology Department of Medicine, Zealand University Hospital, Roskilde serves a regional function in the following specialties: pulmonary medicine, infectious disease medicine and nephrology. Accordingly, the department receives patients from the entire Region with rare and complex conditions within the three specialist fields. In addition, the department takes care of the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic disorders at a basic level for all three specialist fields as well as internal medicine. The department includes a newly founded Multidisciplinary Diagnostic Unit. This unit aims to achieve rapid, straightforward patient-focused pathways, e.g. for the metastasis package, and to ensure better coordination of the assessment and treatment pathway for people with comorbidities. The department collaborates with all hospitals in Region Zealand as well as Odense University Hospital and Copenhagen University Hospital; Rigshospitalet. The department takes active part in the education of doctors from Copenhagen University, as well as postgraduate education. The department contains a Clinical Research Unit (KFE) with projects within the mentioned specialities. The KFE has dedicated project personel and engages in both industry-sponsored interventions studies, investigator initiated research and epidemiological studies.
