Collaborators: The department collaborates closely with practising consultants and dentists. We work with children notably children with upper respiratory tract infections including otitis media; otoneurology (notably patients with vertigo and cranial nerve symptoms), laryngology and phoniatrics; endocrinology (disorders of the thyroid and parathyroid), microbiology (infectious diseases), pathology (tumour diagnosis), radiology and clinical physiology (image diagnostics), oncology (treatment of malignant tumours located in the regions we specialise in), palliative care and terminal treatment. Academic strength: Ear, nose and throat surgery: This is a broad-based department. We have an excellent grounding in audiology, aural surgery, nasal and sinus surgery, head and neck surgery, as well as sleep apnoea. In particular, we frequently perform ear, sinus and goitre operations, and the department has an extensive sleep clinic. Dental, oral and maxillofacial surgery: This is a broad-based department. The department particularly focuses on orthodontic surgery and 3-D planning as well as treatment of agenesis patients. The department includes the medical specialism of ear, nose and throat disorders and dental, oral and maxillofacial surgery Ear, nose and throat surgery includes prevention, diagnostics, treatment and monitoring of surgical and medical disorders as well as traumas in the areas of the ears, nose, sinuses, oral cavity, salivary glands, pharynx, larynx, the soft tissue of the neck including the thyroid gland and facial skeleton. In addition, the department undertakes diagnostic work in relation to diseases of the mediastinum, bronchial tubes and oesophagus, as well as cranial nerve diagnostic testing. Furthermore, experimental and clinical research is conducted within all these fields. Audiology is an area of expertise under otorhinolaryngology, involving the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss. The department is involved in training doctors, consultants, specialist dentists, audiology assistants, nurses and medical secretaries. The age range of the patient clientele spans neonates to the elderly, with intensity of disorders ranging from healthy experiencing mild difficulties to profoundly sick. A large proportion of patients undergo major or minor surgical interventions, preceded by various diagnostic programmes. We also undertake specialist diagnosis with a view to drug therapy. Finally, we also receive some emergency patients requiring emergency medical and/or surgical intervention. Dental, oral and maxillofacial surgery includes prevention, diagnostics, treatment and monitoring of disorders of the oral cavity and jaw/facial regions. We specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of benign disorders. Furthermore, we specialise in the treatment of facial traumas and dental, oral and jaw infections. Finally, we specialise in the treatment of growth-related jaw anomalies and jaw-bone reconstruction. The department undertakes training of specialist dentists (1 training post per year).
