Abstract
Pathophysiological aspects of the diabetogenic effect of statins. Statins are potent inhibitors of cholesterol biosynthesis. Statins are beneficial in the primary and secondary prevention of coronary heart disease. Recent studies indicate that there is an association between statin use and the development of new-onset diabetes mellitus. This article reviews the patophysiological mechanisms by different statins to explain this association.
