ID 196 - Implementing Denmark’s first eHomeHospital: A retrospective study on home-based treatment in Region Zealand

The political motivation behind establishing the eHospital was to improve treatment quality and provide care closer to patients. With increasing pressure on hospitals due to an aging population and a rising number of patients with multimorbidity, new approaches to treatment are necessary. International and national trends indicate that home-based treatment can shorten hospital stays, improve care quality, and reduce costs. In response to this, Region Zealand established Denmark’s first eHomeHospital in 2018.
This study is a descriptive retrospective analysis of admitted patients from 2022 to January 2025. The eHomeHospital provides both early supported discharge and admission prevention, covering the entire Region Zealand. Patients are referred from multiple sources, including hospitals, general practitioners, out-of-hours medical services, and municipal healthcare services. The treatment responsibility lies within the eHomeHospital, while care is delivered either by municipal healthcare professionals or the eHomeHospital’s mobile clinical units.
Since 2022, the eHomeHospital has treated 2600 patients. Of these 70% of patients were discharged to their general practitioner after treatment. The average treatment duration was 5.26 days. These findings support the continued expansion and development of the eHomeHospital on a larger scale, contributing to the transformation of healthcare delivery in Denmark.
